Trekking to Gorropu Canyon

Trekking in the Gorropu Canyon in the wild Supramonte of Urzulei and Orgosolo -one of the most famous in Europe- is certainly one of the most fascinating trekking experiences in Sardinia for those with a passion for this unique sport. Our adventure begins in the village of Su Cungiadeddu (830 m above sea level) aboard our 4×4 off-road vehicle. After crossing the Rio Flumineddu ford, we begin our walk through a forest full of strawberry trees, holm oaks and Mediterranean scrubs along the walls of Monte Oddeu, until we reach the point where the real Canyon of “Su Gorropu” begins. In Sardinian, “Su Gorropu” means “ravine” or “steep slope. It is one of the deepest canyons in Europe.“Gorropu” is a canyon of erosive origin. It is one and a half kilometres long and its limestone walls have been shaped over time by the force of the Rio Flumineddu river.Nowadays, the river flows at the bottom of the canyon, fed by the waters that cross the Supramonte, and its riverbed seeps into underground tunnels or re-emerges in the form of springs further down the gorge. The undersea genesis of the canyon walls took place between 190 and 60 million years ago, as evidenced by the discovery of numerous marine fossils.
