Further information
The itinerary described here follows in the footsteps of the pioneers of Chamonix - Zermatt, as it was conceived and created by Dr. Payot and his partners in 1903, long before the refuges were opened which now allow it to be repeated more easily.
After two stops concurrent with the classic itinerary, the Historic Haute Route moves from Champex to Bourg Sant Pierre (and not to Verbier) and from there goes up to the Valsorey Hut. The fourth day with a climb up to the Plateu du Couloir and the traverse up to the Col du Sonadon, challenging and exceptionally beautiful! The fifth stage climbs to the Breany glacier and the Serpentine glacier to reconnect with the Classic route. On the last day we descend to Zermatt via the Col del Mont Brulè pass and the Col de Valpelline.
